We Ran 160 Lab Tests Without a Doctor's Visit — An Honest Function Health Review

Most of us get a handful of lab values once a year — if we remember to book the physical at all. Function Health flips that: it's a yearly membership that runs 160+ biomarkers, twice a year, and lays them out in an app you can actually read. We signed up to answer one question: is a structured look at your own bloodwork worth $499 a year, or is it a dashboard you glance at once and forget?
The honest take: Function is the most complete consumer lab membership we've used — 160+ markers, two draws a year, transparent flat pricing. It earns its keep if you'll actually act on the data. If you won't, the cheaper move is a conversation with your own doctor.
What Function Health actually is
Function is a preventive lab-testing membership, not a clinic. You enroll online, book a blood draw at one of 2,000+ Quest Diagnostics locations (no insurance required), and a few days later your results land in the app. A clinician reviews every panel and flags anything outside range, then the platform builds a simple action list. You test again six months later to see what moved.
What it is not: a diagnosis, a treatment, or a replacement for your physician. Function screens and tracks — anything flagged still goes to a licensed doctor for interpretation and next steps.
What $499 a year gets you
The core membership is $499/year (Function markets it as about $42 a month), and we've seen a first-year promotional rate closer to $365. It's HSA/FSA eligible, with no per-test surprises. For that you get:
160+ lab tests across heart, metabolic, hormones, thyroid, nutrients, and more
Two full rounds of testing per year, plus on-demand add-ons
Clinician review of every result, with out-of-range markers flagged
An app and web dashboard that tracks trends over time and lets you upload past results
Premium add-ons — advanced cancer screening, MRI and CT imaging — are available through the same platform at extra cost.
What the experience is like
Enrollment is online and takes minutes. Booking the Quest draw is the only in-person step, and with 2,000+ locations there's usually one nearby. Results trickle in over several days rather than all at once, which can feel slow if you're impatient — but the upside is no phlebotomist markup and no insurance claim to fight. Everything consolidates in the app, including older lab results you upload, so for the first time your numbers live in one place instead of scattered across portals.
The part that genuinely impressed us
Two things. First, breadth: 160+ markers in one flat-priced membership works out cheaper per marker than most à-la-carte lab services. Second, the retest. A single snapshot of your bloodwork is mildly interesting; two snapshots six months apart are where it gets useful — you can see whether a change you made actually moved the number. The dashboard makes that trend obvious instead of burying it in a PDF.
One honest note
The clinician notes are thinner than you might hope. Several markers come back with a flag and a fairly generic explanation — enough to tell you "look into this," not enough to replace a real conversation with a physician. Two other caveats worth knowing up front: Function isn't available in New York or New Jersey, and the $499 only pays off if you're the type to act on what you learn. If lab data won't change your behavior, this isn't your purchase.
The verdict
For proactive, data-minded people who want a broad baseline and a way to track it over time, Function Health is the most complete option we've tried — and the flat, insurance-free pricing is refreshingly honest. Skip it if you want clinical care, live in NY or NJ, or know you won't follow up on the results. Whatever it flags, take it to your own doctor: Function is a starting point for that conversation, not a substitute for it. This isn't medical advice, and individual results vary.
