A $38 Powder Shampoo? An Honest Small Wonder Review

Sponsored — in partnership with Small Wonder. Our take is our own.
"Powder shampoo" triggers an instant flinch — visions of waxy, stripped, won't-lather shampoo bars. Small Wonder is betting it can break that stigma. The pitch: traditional liquid shampoo is 70–80% water, so you're paying to ship water; their powder is 100% active, 0% water. Here's the honest read on whether it actually works.
How it works
You dispense the powder from a patent-pending twist-lock Wonder Bottle, add water in your hand or hair, and it lathers up like normal shampoo. The formula ("SHINE37") is built around marula oil, jojoba oil, and kaolin clay; it's sulfate-free, paraben-free, color-safe, cruelty-free, and pH-balanced (4.5–5.5) — formulated to clean and add shine without the stripped feel. It's won a Marie Claire Beauty Award and is stocked at Anthropologie.
The value math
The sticker is $38, which reads steep next to an $8 drugstore bottle. But one 2.5 oz bottle is 50–80 washes (2–3 months), which pencils out to about $0.48–$0.76 per wash. It's also genuinely TSA-friendly and spill-proof — a real perk if you travel.
One honest note
Two honest caveats. The $38 upfront causes sticker shock until you do the per-wash math, so it's a mindset shift more than a true premium. And there are only two SKUs (shampoo + conditioner) — no targeted formulas yet for, say, very dry or very fine hair — so it's a one-size-fits-most system. If you're nervous about the format, that's fair; the lather is the thing to judge first.
The verdict
If the water-weight argument bugs you, you travel a lot, or you want to cut plastic without a shampoo-bar compromise, Small Wonder is the powder that actually lathers — worth the trial. Skip it if you need a specialized formula for a specific hair concern or want the cheapest possible bottle.
